BJP attained majority in the 2016 Assam state elections. In an emphatic mandate, the BJP and its partners won 86 of Assam's 126 assembly seats. Congress, which ruled the state for the last 15 years got only 26 seats. BJP has won 60 seats, with its coalition partners — the Asom Gana Parishad and the Bodoland People's Front winning 14 and 12 respectively.
