Question 2196
Stretching from the Punjab in the west to the Assam valley in the east, the Indo-Gangetic Plain is one of the world’s most extensive and fertile lowlands. Formed by the sediments brought down by rivers like the Indus, Ganga, and Brahmaputra, this plain exhibits a flat topography ideal for agriculture and dense settlement. The accumulation of alluvial deposits over millions of years defines its geological character. Indo-Gangetic plain is an example of ___________.
Answer
Depositional Plain
Why?
Plains are large stretches of flat land . They are, generally, not more than 200 meters above mean sea level . Some plains are extremely flat. Based on their mode of formation, they are classified into 3 types - Erosional, Structural & Depositional. Structural plains are mainly formed by the upliftment of a part of the seafloor or continental shelf. Eg: Great plain of USA. Erosional plains (Peneplains) are formed by the continuous and longtime erosion of uplands. Depositional plains are formed by the depositional activity of various geomorphic agents. Eg: Indo-Gangetic plains .
