Question 185
Directions: Study the following information carefully and answer the questions given below: The central government chose seven states Kerala, Goa, Bihar, Delhi, Odisha, Manipur, and Assam, for the first phase of a project. Seven teams, A, B, C, D, E, F, and G were formed and sent to these states for research and development but not necessarily in the same order. Each of these had a different number of members in it. Team B has three more members in it than team F. The team that was sent to Goa had 21 fewer members than the team that was sent to Delhi. Difference between the number of members in the team that was sent to Odisha and the team B is same as the number of members in team C, also, team B was sent to either Assam or Bihar. The number of members in team D is 83.33% of the number of members in the team that was sent to Manipur but only 11 more members than team C. Team that was sent to Assam has one more member in it than team E, which does not have the highest number of members in it. Average of the number of members in team A and the team that was sent to Delhi is 23. The team that was sent to Kerala had half the number of members in it than the team that was sent to Assam. The number of members in team A is four more than twice the number of members in the team that was sent to Goa. Team D was sent to either Delhi or Odisha and it has three fewer members in it than the team that was sent to Manipur. The team that was sent to Assam has how many members?
Answer
8
Why?
States: Kerala, Goa, Bihar, Delhi, Odisha, Manipur, and Assam. Teams: A, B, C, D, E, F, and G. 1) The team that was sent to Goa had 21 fewer members than the team that was sent to Delhi. 2) Average of the number of members in team A and the team that was sent to Delhi is 23. (Members in team A + Members in the team that was sent to Delhi = 46) 3) The number of members in team A is four more than twice the number of members in the team that was sent to Goa. (Let the number of members in the team that was sent to Delhi = x Implies, the number of members in the team that was sent to Goa = x – 21 (from statement 1) Implies, number of members in team A = 4 + 2(x – 21) x + 4 + 2(x – 21) = 46 (from statement 2) x = 28 x – 21 = 7 (number of members in the team that was sent to Goa.) Number of members in team A = 4 + 2(x – 21) = 18) States Team Members Kerala Goa 7 Bihar Delhi 28 Odisha Manipur Assam 4) The number of members in team D is 83.33% of the number of members in the team that was sent to Manipur but only 11 more members than team C. (Let the number of members in the team sent to Manipur = y Implies, the number of members in team D = 0.8333y Also, the number of members in team C = 0.8333y – 11) 5) Team D was sent to either Delhi or Odisha and it has three fewer members in it than the team that was sent to Manipur. (Let us suppose that team D was sent to Delhi, Implies, 0.8333y = 28 Implies, y = 33.60 Clearly, it is not possible as the number of members in a team can only be a natural number. Our assumption was wrong, team D was sent to Odisha. Also, y – 0.8333y = 3 (from statement 4 and 5) Implies y = 18 (which is equal to the number of members of team A acc. to statement 3) Hence, team A was sent to Manipur. Also, the number of members in team D = 15. From statement 4, Number of members in team C = 0.833y – 11 = 15 – 11 = 4.) States Team Members Kerala Goa 7 Bihar Delhi 28 Odisha D 15 Manipur A 18 Assam 6) The team that was sent to Kerala had half the number of members in it than the team that was sent to Assam. (Let the number of members in the team that was sent to Kerala = z Implies, the number of members in the team that was sent to Assam = 2z) 7) Difference between the number of members in the team that was sent to Odisha and the team B is same as the number of member in team C, also, team B was sent to either Assam or Bihar. (We know that there are 15 members in the team that was sent to Odisha, also the number of members in team C is 4. Implies, the number of members in team B is either 11 or 19 (because the difference is 4). Now, the number of members in the team that was sent to Assam is 2z (even number), hence it cannot be 11 or 19. Implies team B was sent to Bihar.) States Team Members Kerala Z Goa 7 Bihar B 11/19 Delhi 28 Odisha D 15 Manipur A 18 Assam 2z 8) The team that was sent to Assam has one more member in it than team E, which does not have the highest number of members in it. (There are two options to map team E here i.e. either Kerala or Goa. Let us assume that team E was deployed in Kerala, Implies, 2z – z = 1 Implies z = 1 Also, then there would be only one possibility to map team C i.e. in Assam, which according to our assumption has 2 members in it (which is false as team C has 4 members acc. to statement 5.) Hence our assumption was wrong. Team E was sent to Goa and accordingly the number of members in the team sent to Assam is 8. It also means that the number of members in the team that was sent to Kerala is 4 (implies team C was sent to Kerala.)) 9) Team B has three more members in it than team F. (Implies team F was not sent to Delhi as team B can have either 11 or 19 members. Thus, team F was sent to Assam and the number of members in team B is 11 (because team F has 8 members.) As only one team is left to be mapped, we can say team G was sent to Delhi.) States Team Members Kerala C 4 Goa E 7 Bihar B 11 Delhi G 28 Odisha D 15 Manipur A 18 Assam F 8 Clearly, team F was sent to Assam and it consists of 8 members.
