It was the first Indian political organization in the Madras Presidency. Chetty served as its first president. Poona Sarvajanik Sabha was a sociopolitical organisation in British India which started with the aim of working as a mediating body between the government and people of India and to popularise the peasants' legal rights. It started as an elected body of 95 members elected by 6000 persons on April 2, 1870 Though the first political organisation ( All Assam Ahom Association ) was created in 1893 it was in 1954 when Ahom connection to other Tai groups in Assam was formally established. The Indian Association was the first avowed nationalist organization founded in British India by Surendranath Banerjee and Ananda Mohan Bose in 1876. The objectives of this Association were "promoting by every legitimate means the political, intellectual and material advancement of the people".
