Why?
The Supreme Court extended the deadline for publication of the final National Register of Citizens (NRC) for Assam from July 31 to August 31, 2019. The NRC is the register containing the names of citizens of India. It was first created after the census of 1951 under the direction of Ministry of Home Affairs. Assam is the only state in the country with an NRC. It aims to keep a track of illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and other neighbouring countries . This process was in limbo for years. The work of NRC in Assam gained momentum after the intervention of the Supreme Court and the process started in 2015 . Now, the process is being conducted under the guidelines of Supreme Court. The applications for preparation of NRC in Assam were invited in May-August, 2015 and after necessary scrutiny & verification, the draft NRC was published on 30 th July, 2018. People were free to file their claims and the final verification started from 15 February 2019 in accordance with the directions of the Supreme Court.
